Parrots and wings- flight! My daughter says it would be great to come back as a parrot in her next life so that she could fly… How can we not envy flight? How can we not admire it?
How can we clip a parrot’s wings!!!? Ahhhhh!
First, I want to tell you that it’s super important to let them learn to fly, to develop their flight muscles.
Second, it’s also important to know how to clip their wings — so watch my video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMfkoXobn0s
Third – River, our newest Green-cheek Conure that was surrendered to us, loves being with us. But I can’t have her flying across the coffee shop and possibly landing in something hot (or leaving droppings behind!)
So, watch and you’ll know what I did, if you don’t already!

There are SO many articles about wing clipping. It’s not an argument, it’s a scientific fact. MAMY studies have proven that clipping increases a risk in behavioral problems, phobias, stroke, heart disease, muscle atrophy, fatty liver disease, self destruction, obesity, blood feathers, anxiety, depression, chronic stress and the lost continues. Doing this to your bird for your own satisfaction isn’t only selfish but should be a criminal offense. There is no ,every situation is different‘, these are facts. Use a harness for gods sake. I will add some links under this comment so you could please educate yourself.
Did it not work to use a harness on her?
Every bird is different just like every human is different. I know many parrots that were clipped and they were fine. I noticed many parrots that are wings clipped are much calmer and less nippy when wings clipped.
I get it! My little guys (parrotlets) are not clipped, but they don't leave my house. I have a little cage for outside time. I didn't want to clip my ringneck but the breeder in Florida didn't clip my ringneck and had his mom handling him so he would get to women. His mom opened the door to help his dad with pkgs and he flew out the window!!! He and I both were heartbroken 💔 I hope someone finds him and takes care of him. He wasn't weaned yet. The ringneck I have I got local ( I got lucky which isn't usually the case) Floyd (as in pretty boy) came clipped. Ringnecks need to fly, they are prone to weight issues. I will let his feathers grow out. He can fly all he wants in an inside room. Too many have flown away, it definitely depends on the bird. You do want to protect your bird.
What is the age you recommend waiting till to clip?
There are probably times when it's necessary with a flock of birds. I'm sure you wouldn't recommend it to tame all new birds.
My Greencheek Conure was an average flyer because he was caged a lot the last year with his former owner due to new pets, but loved walking around on the sofa and drapes for exercise. He only really flew from room to room to follow me and from chair to sofa. 🦜
I got a baby gcc (6 to 8 months of age) from my mom's friend and the bird was clipped. I have the bird for almost a year now and the bird still can't fly, her wing feathers just won't grow back. I'm really scared that she will never be able to fly. She jumps off the cage and flaps her wings but just lands on the floor.
I'm not sure if the wings will grow back, I'm really upset. 🙁
I don’t hate you. I think for this particular bird it was the right thing to do.
Every situation is different and as long as she’s happy that’s all that matters!
Muy buen video
What are the tree branches that you use in all your bird cages? Please don't tell me to look on the internet the different kinds are contradicting and confusing. I want to know what YOU use.
Thank you for your time this means the world to me. Joe, New Bern NC I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!!!!
She looks so happy and healthy!! Clipping is a case by case basis here at our aviary!! Only one is clipped becuase she is mean to all the other birds . She is always on cloud nine now… No judgement here!! xoxoxo Mateo
We clip our chickens and they still can fly up just a shorter distance. We do it to avoid them clearing a 6ft fence.
I choose on harness leash not clipped
Gosh. All of my birds have had partial clips (3 flight feathers on each wing). It didn’t really impede them. It just seemed to slow them dow a bit. In fact one does a beautiful hover. We joke she is actually a hummingbird. The clip wasn’t our choice. Actually, I’m wrong. Two arrived fully flighted. Ivar is one. He doesn’t fly due to hi s deformity and the other was pretty much kept in a cage. He’s gotten a lot stronger but still hasn’t developed the strength needed for control. I agree it’s much better for them to be flighted.
Couldn't u just get a birdie backpack or just harness train her
I don't believe ppl should clip unless the bird has a disability
Clipping a bird because of "safety" or "taming" is wrong.
So disappointed in your choice!
"Look she is happy." Please- What else can she do than live with this amputation!
You could have used a harness or even put her in a small cage (in the coffee shop only). Don’t even know what to say…
You clip their wings – you clip their souls!
I'm so against clip. I veru much believe in, NOT to clip, unless there may be health issue to heal from an injury. Otherwise I feel clipping is handicapping balance and stripping bird of its self dignity, to clip a bird. Makes me sad. I fully safe proofed my house.. for my birds to be in full flight.
Great video.
I agree with your chorice
You do what YOU want to do. Its YOUR parrot. Don't let anyone bully you around about clipping.
River looks so happy ❤️ and I’m glad that she gets to go out with you. I know you will always do what is best for them. How is Willow?
My girl didn't come clipped and I didn't have the heart to clip her. I know there are things that are taking more time because she is fully flighted but it's just adorable when she buzzes my head because she wants something. It's way better than screaming about it!
