The blue throated conure are the biggest of Pyrrhura conure family with the attitude of large parrot live in eastern Brazil, where they inhabit rainforests or forest edges. They shared the same land with Spix Macaw which lost its population on the land, the same reason could lead to BTC’s future, and most of the remaining regions are heavily fragmented due to deforestation. During 1970’s they are not known and rare in Europe they are sold higher than the price of scarlet macaw.
Why BTC is fascinating?
They were the one of first out of three species of bird to enter the CITES since 1975 along with Lear macaw and Golden conure. The BTC’s are classified as Appendix 1 – vulnerable species.
There are not recorded in the wild with more than seven birds at a time they are often chicks with parents. Recent global fire in their Brazilian forest are the cause of concern. They don’t have any special conservation program, there should be proper study on the population and required measure should be taken as their habit is fragmented due to habit loss and deforestation. The breeders has limited information and they still remain rare in most of the country, remain tough to breed. As individual we have the infrastructure to breed more than 100 birds per. In current status they may go extinct in 15-20 years, every breeder should at least have few pair and work with them for their survival in the captivity.
